MY friends laptop has died on him and he needs to get his data out from the hdd ... so i suggeted that he open the box and remove the lappy hdd and connect it to his desktop's IDE as a slave and just copy over the data. Will this work and if not what needs to be done for the same ? Thanks

u cant connect ur lappy's hd to ur desktop directly cause they r different types of connections. i dont even think u can set a notebook (2.5") hd as master/slave. one way that i have figured out to be pretty useful is to buy a usb/firewire (depending on ur connection) 2.5" hd enclosure. wen onsale..its about $10-20. only prob with this method is that anything on the lappy's desktop and maybe "my documents" cannot be coppied out.

here's a link for the enclosure:

anyother thing with this is that that its plug and play because its usb.
hope that helps!!!

well...if u get the enclosure...u can use that as a portable external hd...since the notebook is dead already. the hd would also be usb powered.
