So, I'm buying a new MP3 player. I really like the Creative Zen Touch, but I've heard that the software that comes with it is bad. If anyone has one, please tell me about your experiances with it. Another MP3 player I like by Creative is the Zen (regular), but it has the same software. It's new (looks like the mini, but bigger), so I doubt any of you will have that one.

Creative Zen Touch
Creative Zen

Or should I just get an iPod?
dukenukem
try the dell jukebox smile.gif
camshaft
You have one?
I haven't really heard about that one that much.
I'll look it up now.

my friend has the 6 mb one ... he says its not as sleek as a iPod but for the money saved its worth it.

six megs is like two songs biggrin.gif
anyway, the Creative Zen Touch is very cool and is much much better than the Ipod simply in the length of time that it will survive. The Pod dies in around a year or two and the normal battery life is like 6 hours maybe the first day! the Zen is closer to like 20 hours or more! Another good one is the Iriver 20gb one, it has a color screen and can store pictures for viewing and even plays movies and still has more than decent battery life. The Iriver is most expensive out of the bunch that i mentioned but worth it. And besides EVERYONE has an Ipod, i bought one back when they werent cool in January of last year, now i feel kinda dumb. It has terrible battery life and i watch my time with it pretty carefully. If these others were out before i would have definately bought them. The Ipod is very easy to use however and it does look pretty cool, but thats about it.
camshaft
The iRiver is expensive, but it's nice. Any info on that is welcome too.

Duke, the 6mb is the mini, but it look the same as the regular Zen, it's just smaller. I'm sort of considering the 6mb though, because I'll never really fill up 20gb with music that I really like.

EDIT: Dylan says the iRiver's software sucks (his mom has one).

lol my mp3 player is BlackJack's Creative Nomad MuVo-NX 256mb that i have yet to pay him for yet..
Cyclone
I had a Creative mp3 player awhile back and the software sucked shit. And the fact that I HAD to use their software sucked even more. Now I have an iPod and I love it. iTunes is a great program
one
I was at bestbuy, and I saw the Zen Touch, played around with it for a bit.
The touch thingy is really, really, laggy. It sorta aggravated me because like, after I ' touched ' it up, it actually scrolls up like, a second later.

Hehe, the touch wheel on my ipod isnt laggy at all smile.gif

Yeah, the touch wheel on the Ipod is great. I just hate being mainstream and whatnot. head.gif

the ipod gets scratched way too easily, and Itunes gets annoying, along with the fact that the battery life is complete garbage. But about the Iriver, i heard that the program wasnt that bad and was fairly easy to use.

what the... hell.

Moe said something that is actually true....

I have an iRiver FP-790, I have had it for a while, there is no problem with the software, its incredibly easy to use, I guess dylan was just having an emo day or something ( tongue_orig.gif ).

The thing I love about iRivers, is...
1. they look cool.
2. there is a ridiculous amount of features.
3. with their competitors they offer an overall better deal.
4. Performance is superb.
and lastly...
5. they arent iPods, so everyone and their mom doesnt have one.

the next mp3 player I am buying is going to be the next gen iRiver 20 GB. I cant wait for it. XD

But then again, camshaft, you arent me, and the Zen does give alot of GB's per dollar, one of the main reasons I dont like is because is fuckin huge. So if you can deal with that, then by all means, a Zen is a great choice.

Are you smoking crack or something? I have one of the first iPods, over 3 years old now, and the battery gets a good 8 hours like it was supposed to. Then I recently got a new 60GB iPod photo, and I don't know about that 6 hour brand new, cause that's a load of bull, mine lasted at least 14 hours if not longer. I don't know where you get your iPod info about that, but it's not very accurate.

And they can scratch, although it's not that big of a deal. Had my iPod photo for several months now, I just keep it in a case it came with, and don't have any major scracthes on it yet. It's all how you take care of stuff.

There is no way in hell that the new Ipod Photo get 14 hours laugh.gif , and i guess i can kinda believe your older one getting around 8 hours. The more recent ones get crappy battery life tongue_crossed-eyes.gif and my Ipod info is from first-hand experience.

Yeah, I hear it takes a while to get used to.
The iPod mini is 6GB, I really want something with 10GB or more.

Here are some iRivers, if the software isn't too bad:
iRiver H10 20GB.
iRiver H320
Dylan
Actually. I'd go with the H320. The software isn't that bad, it's not as huge as the one I had a bad experience with, it's sexy, and it can view photos. Take that ipod!

My first hand experience calls your first hand experience a load of bullshit since my ipod 20gb gets a good 14 hours. If you're sitting there browsing songs constantly using the hd the battery life suffers but thats true of ANY hd based mp3 player.
Boxster17
You're full of crap moe...mine is supposed to get 15 hours with normal playback. I don't sit there looking at it all the time, I'll put on a CD, let it play, then switch to something else. Unless you're constantly messing with it and having the backlight go on all the time, it'll last long enough. I set my backlight to 2s (I think that's the lowest) so it's only going on for a few secs every hour, therfore not using much battery..

If you know how to use the iPod properly it's not hard to get good battery life from it, I suggest reading these tips:

QUOTE
The iPod has a Lithium-ion/polymer type battery, these commonly are only rated at 300-500 charges; the iPod in my experience has been rated at 500, (you will see why this figure isn't anything to worry about).

Lithium-ion is a low maintenance battery, an advantage that most other chemistries cannot claim. There is no memory and no scheduled cycling is required to prolong the battery's life. In addition, the self-discharge is less than half compared to nickel-cadmium, making lithium-ion well suited for modern fuel gauge applications. lithium-ion cells cause little harm when disposed.

A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.

Some sound advice:
# Avoid full discharges; recharge lithium-ion more often. Repetitive random charge does not harm the battery. There is no memory.
# Keep the lithium-ion battery cool. Avoid a hot car. For prolonged storage, keep the battery at a 40% charge level.
# Avoid purchasing spare lithium-ion batteries for later use. Observe manufacturing date. Do not buy old stock, even if sold at clearance prices.

Some Do's and Don'ts:
# Do charge the battery often. The battery lasts longer with partial rather than full discharges.
# Avoid full cycle because of wear. 80% depth-of-discharge recommended. Re- charge more often. Avoid full discharge. Low voltage may cut off safety circuit.
# No maintenance needed. Loses capacity due to aging whether used or not.
# Store at 40% charge in a cool place. Do not store at full charge and at warm temperatures because of accelerated aging.

How to Charge and When to Charge:
Should I use up all battery energy before charging?

# No, it is better to recharge more often; avoid frequent full discharges.  Yes, on batteries with a fuel gauge, allow a full discharge once a month to enable reset

Should I charge my batter partially or fully?
# Does not matter. Charging in stages is acceptable. Full charge termination occurs by reading the voltage level and charge current. Charging a full battery is safe and does not cause harm.

Should the battery be kept charged when not in use?
# Best to store at 40% charge. Cool storage is more important than state-of-charge.  Do not fully deplete battery because Li-ion may turn off its protection circuit.

Will the battery heat up during charge?
# No, little heating is generated during charge. A large laptop battery may get lukewarm. Do not allow the battery to heat during charge. [If charging the iPod in a dock connected to a PC & if the drive is mounted; the Hard Drive head will still spin, and it will heat up].

What should I know about chargers?
# Charger should apply full charge. Avoid economy chargers that advertise one-hours charge. Fastest full-charge time: 2-3 hours.

That's probably bacause you are trying all the functions. When i got my new phone it didn't last a day. Now it lasts way longer.
moe89
i havent even kept the backlight on for more than 5 minutes over the course of the last year and a half! and i keep the contrast fairly low. I couldnt be doing more to save batt life.
nismo
Well, Did you run the battery all the way down, then chasrge it all the way, then repeat? That is what you are supposed to do.
moe89
i only charge when the battery is fully dead
Boxster17
Well if you follow those tips it should run better. You're not supposed to run it completely dead more than once a month, as it just lowers the life of the battery, and with these batteries it's better that you charge them whenever you're not using them.

You might have said it before, but what model do you have?
