PAULIE_D
"The Breeze" is a high-speed ferry that operates between Toronto Ontario, Canada and Rochester New York, United States. It was in operation last year but the comoany that was running it fell on hard financial timed. It's due to start up again shortly.

The engines: Instead of operating with a propeller, the ferry uses a jet water propulsion system that sucks in water and shoots it out to move. The system can fill an Olympic-size pool in about 30 seconds, pumping 20,000 gallons per second at full thrust.

The ship features four diesel engines made by MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH. Austal Ships, the Australian shipbuilder, and MTU say the Spirit of Ontario is the "world's most powerful diesel-powered high-speed catamaran."

Two MTU 20-cylinder engines are in each hull of the ferry. Each engine has a maximum horsepower of about 11,000, with a total horsepower of about 44,000 at a rated speed of 1,150 rpm, according to the company. Each engine has the equivalent power of 90 PT Cruisers

QUOTE
The Breeze is officially named The Spirit of Ontario. The Breeze Ferry is a twin-hulled catamaran touted as the only high-speed car-and-passenger ferry service on the Great Lakes. The Breeze was built in Perth, Australia. The Breeze Ferry, a 284-foot-long vessel, recently docked in Hawaii on a round-the-world voyage to its new homeport in Rochester. Credit Mayor Johnson with tenacity. His struggle to keep The Breeze Ferry in Rochester paid off, when the city bought The Breeze for $32 million.

The nickname "The Breeze" came about with a "Name the Ferry" contest. It drew approximately 30,000 entries in two months. Cindy Lucas, 36, a country club office manager and mother of two in rural Ogden west of Rochester, came up with the winning moniker. Her reward for naming the vessel The Breeze was two free lifetime passes aboard the $42 million vessel.

The Breeze, which is made of aluminum, is 284 feet long, 78 feet wide & weighs more than 1,400 tons. It is capable of carrying up to 470 tons. The Breeze Ferry can accommodate approximately 750 passengers, up to 220 cars and up to 10 tour buses or trucks. The Breeze is as high as a 5 story building, nearly as long as football field, and bigger than a jumbo jet. The Breeze Ferry can reach a top speed of 47.2 knots, or nearly 55 mph. The Breeze will have a loaded speed of 45.7 knots. Instead of operating with a propeller, The Breeze uses a jet water propulsion system that sucks in water and shoots it out to move. The system can fill an Olympic-size pool in about 30 seconds, pumping an amazing 20,000 gallons per second at full thrust.

The Breeze Ferry is a truly unique way to travel between Rochester & Toronto. Your 2 hour & 15 minute journey on board The Breeze is jam-packed with all of the exciting diversions & amenities that you would expect to find on a cruise ship!

The Toronto Rochester Ferry is much more than transportation between Toronto & Rochester. The Breeze is a luxury vessel that can accommodate approximately 750 people, up to 220 vehicles and up to 10 buses or trucks. Travel time is approximately 2 hours & 15 minutes from port to port, traveling at 55 mph. The Toronto Rochester Ferry is just like a mini cruise ship with all the amenities that you can expect. What an exciting way to make the journey from Toronto to Rochester! Your trip aboard The Breeze will provide you with a most memorable experience. The Toronto Rochester Ferry is meant to be a total travel experience!

The ship measures 86.563 meters (284 ft) in length and 23.8 meters (78 ft) wide. The Toronto Rochester Ferry is as high as a 5 story building, nearly as long as football field, and bigger than a jumbo jet.

That's because it had to make it's way up the St. Lawrence River while it was being transported to Toronto / Rochester on it's maiden voyage from it's home in Australia (where it was built).

Hint:

compare the travelling time to drive from Rochester to Toronto (driving around the lake) vs. the time it takes to go across Lake Ontario on The Breeze
arnge

well, most boats would be faster than driving around. Is this one much faster than other large ferries?(i see the "High Speed ferry" part but how much faster?)
