Audi A4 2.0T 2009

The Audi A4 has always been a stylish, upscale car, distinguished by its Quattro all-wheel-drive system, one of the best available. Body styles include a convertible, sedan, and the Avant wagon. The 2009 sedan redesign arrived last fall. As before, it is offered with either a turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a V6. The base front-wheel-drive version starts at $30,700. We bought a typically equipped automatic 2.0T Quattro with the Premium Plus package for $37,525. Lots of safety gear, including stability control and six air bags, are standard.

Initial impression

The '09 A4 is slightly larger and drives considerably better than its predecessor. It is more agile, quieter, and power delivery is smoother. Interior fit and finish remain first class. But it is still snug inside and some controls are needlessly complex.

The direct-injection turbo Four is more refined than previously. It revs smoothly and willingly; midrange punch is particularly robust. A 3.2-liter V6 is also offered, but that puts the sticker over $40,000—a lot for a car this size. The six-speed automatic is smooth and responsive. So far, our A4 has been delivering about 24 mpg on premium fuel.

Handling is responsive, the steering is quick and well weighted, and the body leans little in turns, but it still lacks the agility and sportiness of its archrival, the BMW 3 Series. The Quattro AWD system provides great snow traction, as expected. The brakes feel a little touchy, especially in stop-and-go traffic. The ride is very taut and the suspension isolates road bumps well, translating them into modest, muted kicks. The body feels steadier and more tied down than before, and the cabin admits very little exterior noise.

The interior is a little tight, especially in the rear seats, but it's beautifully furnished, with comfortable leather seats and impressive attention to detail. Every switch and control is lighted at night and the switchgear has an excellent tactile feel. Some controls are needlessly difficult to operate. The audio system is not at all intuitive and adjusting the seat heaters is a two-step process. Even getting the ignition switch to release the key can be frustrating.
